GIS Training for DoE Experts, Islamic Republic of Iran

A two day GIS & Remote Sensing training workshop was held on 20-21 August 2008 at the Department of Environment (DoE) in Mazandaran Province. About 12 experts from the DoE Mazandaran participated in this training workshop. The training was conducted as part of the training need analysis report developed by the National Coordination Unit (NCU) in 2007.

In 2007, Iran NCU, with the help of a national consultant, developed the GIS and related database in Arcview for both project sites including Fereydoon Kenar NSA and Bujagh National Park. Iran NCU plans to improve this system and develop detailed maps for project sites through working on IKONOS satellite images.

The training workshop consisted of several sessions including:

  1. Introduction to Remote Sensing including Satellite Data Specifications; Data Analysis; Satellite Stations; Geostationary satellites; Scanning and sampling modes; Active and Passive Remote Sensing; Airborne and Spaceborne Radar Systems; Sampling methods and applications of remote sensing.

  2. Introduction to GIS including What is GIS; Spatial Data; Attribute Data; Exploring Relationships; GIS Capabilities; GIS Components; and Different kinds of geographical data.

  3. GIS Applications and Processes including GIS Functions; What Can GIS Do; Modeling Processes; Appeal and Potential of GIS and GIS Users.
