Eco Action Clean Spring

Local Akims at the Ecological Forum

Environmental Education Program, Republic of Kazakhstan
Spring 2008

Spring 2008 was remarkable for several nature protection and ecological actions: on cleaning the springs in Naurzum and Auliekol districts, March of Parks, organization of the second meeting of the district Ecological Forum, beginning of the "Ecosanitary-Energy-Ecology" grant project implemented with participation of  "Naurzum Bionet" and "Ak-Niet" local NGOs with financial support of the Government of the Netherlands within the framework of "Empowerment and Local Action" Programme and "Women of Europe for a Common Future" ( WECF) international organization. In addition, a new stage in the implementation of the programme on environmental education - the first lesson on training materials, created within the framework of the project, was conducted, the first training cases for primary schoolchildren were distributed to the schools of Karamendy village of Naurzum district, and the first play of the Club of Merry and Cute Ecologists (KVN) took place for the first time on May 5, 2008.

Environmental lesson in kindergarten

This action of great scale for Naurzum district is a single action of that kind. KVN has never been conducted in Naurzum on district level, moreover, an ecological one and in two leagues: in state and Russian languages. The idea of a play for schoolchildren was proposed by the members of the organization long ago, and due to the support of Vera Inyutina, the National Project Manager, it became possible to realize it. Within the framework of the project, the public, and mainly, the youth of all project districts have been informed about ecological problems of the region through the first and the second Crane Festivals, as well as the First Ecological Forum. And here is a new original approach - an ecological play. When preparing for participation, all local youth studied available literature on biodiversity conservation and all existing ecological problems and tasks (this was the main goal of the action).

“Let the wittiest and the most literate young ecologist win!" was Bakhytzhan Badygulov’s address to the participants of the play, one of the leaders of "Naurzum BioNet" NGO, who was responsible for organizing and conducting the KVN. Practically all secondary educational institutions of Naurzum district - more than 120 people – were involved in the play. Due to established contacts and popularity of "Naurzum BioNet", all known "L-Club" under the leadership of deputy director of Naurzum secondary school, Ms. A. Omarova, the employees of the departments of education, internal policy, culture and development of languages took part in organization of the action.

Team White Crane

The names of the teams were very ecological: "Aksuat", "Aqua", "Eco-club", "Friends of nature" etc. In spite of considerable remoteness of many rural counties from the district centre and other large populated areas, many rural schools have demonstrated a high level of literacy, humor and organization. The spectators and jury members liked the teams: "Asia Kazynasy" (Shily village - in the state language league), "Karamendy Maximum" (Dokuchaev Secondary School - in the Russian language league), “Friends of Nature”(Razdolnoye Secondary School) and “Kyzyl Ayaktar” (Zhambyl OM).

In state language league, the best ecologists-humorists according to a unanimous decision of the jury and appreciation of spectators were "Asia Kazynasy". In the Russian language league the participants of brilliant and incendiary "Karamendy Maximum" team won. There were many fans watching the event. It’s impossible to imagine KVN without lined paper, declaiming, drums and decorations – ecologists had everything.

The representatives of district and regional mass media also visited a new ecological holiday. The winners and participants of the play were awarded certificates and diplomas, prepared by project designer, as well as prizes.
Everybody liked a new holiday - it turned out to be an efficient action in attracting youth to a solution of social and ecological problems, which were addressed during contests and quizzes.

The "Siberian Crane", which has become a friend for people here, gathered us again under its wing and has become the bird, which established one more good tradition in Naurzum district - KVN.
