Training Workshop on Waterbird Monitoring in the South Caspian Region A national training workshop on Waterbird Monitoring in the South Caspian Region was convened in Ramsar 25-28 December 2007. The workshop was attended by 35 participants from three provinces of the south Caspian including Golestan, Mazandarana and Gilan, as well as participants from Tehran and Ardabil provinces. The main objective of the workshop was to increase the capacity of DoE experts on waterbird monitoring. In addition, the SCWP in Iran aims to develop and implement a waterbird monitoring plan for the South Caspian lowlands including the two project sites – Fereydoon Kenar Non Shooting Area and Bujagh National Park and other key sites such as Miankaleh Wildlife Refuge, Anzali Wetland, Amirkelayeh, etc. Therefore the provided training was required as an essential step towards the development of a monitoring plan for the South Caspian Region. This training was provided by an international consultant from SOVON Dutch Research Center for field ornithology.

Mr. Frank William, Researcher of SOVON Dutch Center for Field Ornithology and workshop trainer The workshop was a four day training course (including one day field training in Bujgah National Park) for selected DoE site and provincial level experts from five provinces (mentioned above). The workshop program included an Introduction to waterbird monitoring: why count waterbirds etc; Counting strategies: counting bird groups, equipment etc; Characteristics of monitoring scheme: which sites to count, what frequency etc; Division of sites into subsites and counting units; Database & analyses; and Species identification.
Field visit to Bujagh National Park, participants identifying waterbirds and counting groups For the outline monitoring plan, site monitoring procedures were developed during the training and on the last day of the workshop the trainees were divided into four working groups and each of the working groups developed a monitoring scheme (based on maps) for one of the main sites (Fereydoon Kenar, Bujagh, Miyankaleh and Amirkelayeh).
